Father and Daughter Make Massage Therapy Careers a Family Affair

June 20th, 2010

Florida School of Massage Therapy graduates Steve Valiquette, 53, and his daughter Katie Mossor, age 23, attending and graduating from school together had many benefits, including carpooling.

“I drove us the entire year we we

nt to Cortiva. I put 44,000 miles on my car just for school!” jokes Steve. Both father and daughter graduated with Massage Therapy certificates and hope to combine their skills by working together whenever possible at special events like wedding parties.

For father Steve, having his daughter with him made the school experience very special. “It’s been fantastic to have her by my side everyday, learning and sharing,” he says. Steve hopes to take his massage therapy skills and enhance them by studying energy and cranial sacral work. He’s also hoping to take his massage therapist skills to dental practices to help keep patients calm and enhance their overall experience.

Daughter Katie was attracted to the field of professional massage therapy by “the connection you make with your clients — and how you can help their well-being. It’s powerful.” Happy with the support and training she received at Cortiva, says Katie, “I’m pleased that people are giving me a chance to show how I can help improve their lives through massage therapy.”

Massage therapy remains a fast-growing field, even in these tough economic times. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor’s 2010-2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook states that employment for massage therapists is expected to increase 19 percent through 2018, faster than average for all occupations.

For many career changers like Steve, massage therapy tops the list for realizing monetary and spiritual rewards within a manageable time frame. The profession seems a natural fit for career changers. In fact, many massage therapists are in their 40s, and have entered the profession as a second career, according to the American Massage Therapy Association.

To Spa or Not to Spa: Primary Reasons for Spa Visits

June 19th, 2010

Stephanie Perrone Goldstein on June 11, 2010

In the current economic climate, what gets a consumer to try a particular spa they have not been to before?

In Coyle’s Global Spa Survey, we asked respondents to tell us

what the primary reasons for their latest spa visits were. Respondents were encouraged to select as many options as applicable, thinking of their past several spa experiences. The results are as follows:

  • Relaxation/Stress Management – 89%
  • Hair/Nail/Waxing Maintenance – 60%
  • Improve Appearance – 44%
  • Skin Care – 38%
  • Gift – 34%
  • Pain Management – 23%
  • Social Experience – 22%
  • Other – 4%
  • Medical Reasons – 4%

Almost every spa patron is seeking Relaxation/Stress Management. Spa-goers seeking maintenance (hair/nail/waxing) and appearance improvement, the number two and three reasons for spa visits on the list, are also an important market, and by definition are already purchasers of what spas offer.

34% of the responses indicated that visits were prompted by redeeming a gift certificate. We are hard-pressed to think of another industry where gift certificate redemption is a primary driver for a purchase.

Manicure Trick – Wrap Your Tips

June 18th, 2010

Much like wrapping the perfect present, a flawless, long lasting manicure requires a little wrapping of its own. Wrapping the free edge of your nail with polish helps extend the wear of your manicure and should become an essent

ial step in your routine.

I’m sure most professional nail techs consider this part of their everyday manicure service but it’s not as well known in the consumer world. Since we discussed this technique in the comments of my Quirius review, and there were multiple requests for details, I figured a quick tutorial was in order.

Read on to see my step-by-step guide to wrapping your tips and get a look at one of American Apparel’s latest nail polish releases. It’s GREEN!

Apparently I can’t get enough of teal, turquoise and aqua at the moment. As much as I try not to latch onto trends, you can only see so many gorg blue-green brights before getting sucked in. There are so many in my office right now that you’d swear I’m adopting a Caribbean theme. One of the shades I’ve been dying to try is from American Apparel’s Summer Collection called Malibu Green so I decided to use it for this tutorial.

  • Step 1
  • Apply base coat and first layer of nail polish as usual. Allow the lacquer to dry

  • Step 2
  • Wipe off your brush really well leaving a minimal amount polish on the bristles. Gently swipe the brush along the free edge of your nail getting a bit of polish just underneath the tip. You can hold the brush at a lower angle than seen here but because I don’t have three arms that was impossible to show.

    Hot Stone Massage Therapy

    June 17th, 2010

Hot stone massage is a special massage technique that involves placing heated, smooth basalt stones on certain points on the body in order to open up the energy channels. Hot stone massage was introduced by Mary Hannigan in 1

993 and she called it as “LaStone Therapy“.

Many massage therapists and spas have developed their own versions of hot stone massage, which they implement in their spas. The hot basalt stones used in hot stone massage are rich in iron, because of which they can absorb and retain heat. The stones used are smooth and flat.

How is Hot Stone Massage Performed?

Prior to a massage, massage therapist will immerse stones in water and heat them in an electrical heating unit for certain temperature. Before placing them on your body, he will hold the stones and conform that they are not too hot.

You will be asked to remove all the clothes and lay down on your back. Oil will be applied on your body so that the hot stones glide smoothly along the muscles. You are asked to lie face down. The massage therapist will then hold hot stones in his hands and apply gentle strokes to massage your back. When the stones cool down, he replaces it with other hot stones.

When the therapist feels that the muscles are relaxed, he may keep the stones aside and massage the body directly with the hands. He may then place the hot stones on certain points on the back and leave it for some time.

You will then be asked to lie down on your back and small hot stones may be placed between the toes or on the palm. A typical hot stone massage session lasts for about 60 to 90 minutes.

Waxing Tips and Getting Rid of Unwanted Hair Techniques

    June 16th, 2010

    By Ezilon.com Articles

Who doesn’t like to get rid of unwanted hair and feel the comfort of soft silky skin? However, a lot of people are still not comfortable with this act and think twice, especially when it comes to waxing.

Waxing, even though a bit painful, is one of the most favored and effective methods of hair removal. It is also the longest lasting temporary hair removal technique available. There are two types of waxing techniques – hot waxing and cold waxing. Hot waxing is the common method of waxing performed in salon while cold waxing is preferred by most people at home. However, hot or warm waxing is more effective than cold waxing.

Waxing involves a minimum amount of discomfort. However, following some easy to follow directions and simple tips you can perform this method perfectly. And once you experience the benefits of this hair removing technique, you would perhaps not think of any other means of hair removal but waxing.

Tips while preparing for a wax

Whether you use hot wax or cold wax you must make sure that the hair is atleast 1/8 of an inch for hair to be embedded by the wax. You must also make sure that the skin is clean and thoroughly dry to get the best waxing results. Also ensure that the wax is not over heated, as it might cause a skin burn. The consistency of the wax should be like honey. However, to avoid mess try using disposable cellophane strips rather than the traditional cloth ones.

Tips on applying wax during waxing

You should try and test a small area before proceeding with a large one to make sure that there are no allergic reactions. Also make sure to apply the wax in the same direction as that of the hair growth. While removing the wax strip make sure to pull it against the direction parallely and not straight up to the body.

    Post wax tips

Applying hand pressure on the waxed area helps in soothing the skin. A lotion or the application of oil on the skin also does well. A lot of people tend to suffer from redness or itchiness just after a wax. Applying an ice pack can be the solution to this problem.

Tips on Using a Self-Tanning Spray

    June 15th, 2010

A spray tan is a great way to achieve that summer glow without the harmful risks of sun damage. Purchase the right self-tanning spray, and you can skip that airbrush appointment at the local tan salon and put your saved money towards a new bathing suit instead.

    Before Applying

First, take the time to read the labels. If you are fair-skinned, go for a medium tanner no more than two shades darker than your current complexion. If you have a darker complexion or are already sporting a base tan, go for the dark tanner.

For the easiest application, choose a spray over a lotion. A clear self-tanning spray is recommended because it will not stain clothes or bedding. However, beware: the spray will appear invisible on skin when first applied and then slowly reveal a tan a couple hours later.
